Customizing with Design Layouts

As a project manager during the design part of projects I often get asked by clients how their site will look when they put all of their information in it. In other words, how will the content look? The easiest and best way to customize your content on a website is by using different Design Layouts.

When building a website, the look and feel of the pages and content are determined by the Design Layouts. You are able to put any type of content that you want on your site, but how it looks will be determined by the different Design Layouts on your website.

For instance, you can put a video on any page inside your site. However, if you have designed the page to highlight text and you drop a video randomly in the middle, it might not look good. Or if you’ve designed the page to highlight photos and video and you decide to put a 600 word article on that page instead, not so good.

Your site is designed with certain layouts that are meant to highlight certain types of information. They will be formatted a certain way, have a certain look, feel, color, size, etc.

Some examples of Design Layouts that you will see on websites (this is not an exclusive list).

This is typically an instant “wow” producing page which communicates at a glance who you are, what you do and most importantly, where you should go next on the site to find the data you are looking for. Every website needs a Home Page layout.

This is usually the type of page to put the general information on your site. Data about the company, services, frequently asked questions, etc. Unless there is a compelling reason to set the data apart, you would put it on an Inner Page layout.

This is designed usually to show an overview of your work or projects and then an individual page for each one. Usually very visual and works best for companies that have either physical products or projects that can be shown off with photos and text.

This type of layout is specifically designed to highlight the staff on your team and data about them. Usually consisting of a gallery or menu of some sort and then an individual page to cover each person once they are clicked on. Also a very visual page and highly recommended for industries that depend on confidence in the team or person they are working with specifically. Examples would be Financial Advisers, Lawyers, Boutique firms of any sort, Family-Owned businesses, Sales Organizations and so on.

This type of layout should be on every single site. It usually contains a map and a form for potential customers to fill out. This is usually the whole point of the site and where you are trying to guide visitors. It should be clear and prominently featured in your site design and navigation so your customers can find it easily.

There are so many things you can do with Design Layouts that a full list would be impossible to put together.
