What Is Responsive Design?

Every time a new device is created, there are more varying screen sizes and orientations to consider. These new devices with new screen sizes are being developed all the time. Each of these devices may be able to handle variations in size. Some  of these devices are in landscape, others in portrait, and some devices are even completely square. We know from the rising popularity of the iPhone (or any smartphone), many new devices are able to switch from portrait to landscape at the user’s discretion. How is a website supposed to account for all these situations?

Responsive Web design means that a website should respond to the user’s environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. This is created by using a mix of flexible grids and layouts, images, and smart website development.

When the user switches from their laptop to iPad, the website should automatically switch to accommodate for resolution. In other words, the website should automatically respond to the user’s device. This would eliminate the need for a different design and development phase for each new gadget on the market.

Due to the increasing number and different sizes of devices out there, getting a website with responsive design is must for anyone who is serious about their online presence.
